KIN217 - Fluid Mosaic Model: from an idea to your textbook

Stage 1. The Research Begins: Dr. S.J. Singer

The Beginning.......information flow to the invisible college

Scholarly research begins with an idea which is investigated and then discussed within the"invisible college".  The invisible college is a set of colleagues interested in and expert on a particular subject. New communication tools such as email, listservs and blogs have greatly expanded the size and number of invisible colleges.

In the 1960's, Dr. Seymour Jonathan Singer was a researcher at the University of California, San Diego. He and several other biologists were researching the structure of cell membranes and during this time, they discovered the fluid mosaic model of cell membrane structure. His initial research and discussions with colleagues are considered the first stage in the flow of information.
